While the Yorktown Victory Center Museum is top notch, the kids will really enjoy the Revolutionary War Encampment. On the day we were there, volunteers got to work through the canon firing sequence, although safety requirements prevented them from actually touching off the cannon, seeing first-hand all of the steps involved in setting off a single round from a Revolutionary War field piece is a big jump from playing shoot-em-ups on a video game.
Besides watching the cannon come to life, visitors also get to see how messy and crude medical emergencies were met during the early days. Of particular interest to myself, was the cooking display.
Ever wonder how an army with 1000s of men could have enough fresh bread made on a regular basis? The simple field baking display is amazing.
